Kayla Yamada grew up on Maui in Kahana, which happens to be located very close to Honolua Bay on the west side of Maui. She got her first surf board from her Dad when she was just eight years old, and has been hooked on surfing ever since. Kayla grew up surfing at Puamana and Lahaina Harbor. Over time, she built up the skills and confidence to start surfing more challenging waves like Honolua Bay and Windmills. So it was only a matter of time before Kayla fell in love with the perfect waves that break at Honolua Bay during the winter months. She has done a great job representing the sport with her smooth style, impressive tube riding skills, and sharp maneuvers. All while encompassing an obvious love for surfing and all it has to offer her. So it should come as no surprise that Kayla has appeared in numerous finals at the "Legends of the Bay" event held at Honolua Bay each year, along with final appearances in other island competitions as well.
From an early age, Kayla has always been into all things surrounding the ocean and beach. These things make her heart happy, and enable her to feel whole. Being a new Mom has been a lot of fun for Kayla and she already can't wait to go tandem surfing with her little daughter, Ailah, to teach her about the ocean and the joy that riding the waves brings. If you see Kayla on land or in the surf, her positive energy and contagious smile says it all.
